IS THERE ANY FOLLOW-UP OR ADDITIONAL RESOURCES AVAILABLE POST-WORKSHOP?
Yes, we have the facility to ask follow up questions for a period of one week to the instructor and you will receive a small e-book containing basic steps of an introduction to Grasshopper and the projects’ pseudocode.
WHAT EXACTLY IS GRASSHOPPER, AND HOW IS IT USED IN PARAMETRIC DESIGN?
Grasshopper is a software that allows you to write recipes or steps to design a 3D object. If the input values(parameters) for your recipe changes, your output will change. This is why designs created using grasshopper are often called parametric design. This form of modelling allows creation of complex forms as well as analysis/data driven geometries.
WHO CAN ATTEND THIS WORKSHOP?
It is open to anyone. In the past we have had first year under graduate students, M Arch students, as well as seasoned professionals attending.Basic Rhino experience is required. If you have used the software for about 20 hrs you will be familiar with the Rhino, to the extent that you will be able to grasp the concepts and workflows of Grasshopper.
WHAT WILL I BE ABLE TO DO BY THE END OF THIS WORKSHOP?
You will have an understanding of the basic methods of parametric modelling. By tackling 3 typical parametric projects, you will explore these introductory concepts and techniques thoroughly – seeing it in action in different situations. It will be an intense workshop, but at the same time will have lots of repetition of fundamental concepts to ensure you leave with confidence to begin a career in parametric design.

Parametric design skills can be useful in designing both highly complex forms as well as super simple repetitive ones. You are designing a process rather than an end result. In future this knowledge opens the doors to more complex analysis and simulations regarding climate, crowd flow and visibility.

About the Instructor:
Ashwin Abraham
Ashwin is a computational designer with an M Arch from the Architectural Association (AA) in London. The masters program involved interrogating new synergies of architecture and ecology through the critical intersection of computational design and fabrication. Projects are pursued by multiple iterations through hypothesis, material and computational experimentation, robotic fabrication, and evaluation. A key outcome was the Re-Emerge pavilion constructed out of steam bent waste wood in collaboration with Hassell Studio.
Since graduation he has worked at Mamou – Mani Architects, Gensler and KOPE AI on projects of various scales from parametric curved wooden interior false ceilings, computational plugins for grasshopper to generative design for city masterplans.
